Prominent Indian social activist Deep Joshi, who has done pioneering work for "development of rural communities", was today named along with five others for the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2009, considered as Asia's equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Joshi is being recognised for "his vision and leadership in bringing professionalism to the NGO movement in India, by effectively combining 'head' and 'heart' in the transformative development of rural communities," the Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation said in a press statement from its headquarters in Manila. "I am delighted to get this honour. But the award is not for an individual, it is for an idea, for the development of rural population. We need the educated people to go to rural areas and work for their welfare," siad 62-year-old Joshi. A masters in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Masters in Management from the Sloan School, MIT, Joshi worked with the Systems Research Institute, the Ford Foundation and has nearly 30 years of experience in the field of rural development and livelihood promotion. He also advises the government on poverty alleviation strategies. Joshi was the co-founder of Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) and now works as an independent consultant for the NGO which works for rural poor, promoting self-help groups, developing locally suitable economic activities, mobilising finances and introducing systems to improve livelihoods of rural people.

Deep Joshi who was presented with the Ramon Magsaysay Award (Asias’s equivalent to the Nobel Prize) was a Program Officer in the New Delhi Office and his wife Sheela, worked there as the Senior Adminisitrative Assistant and Executive Assistant of the Representative for many many years. A great honor for all of us. Jeff Campbell Warm greetings from the Philippines! Two days ago, I had the great honor, privilege and pleasure of attending the Presentation Ceremonies and Gala Dinner for the six Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for 2009 – from Thailand, India, China, Philippines and Burma. Truly an inspiring group of Asian heroes!! Our good friend and RLLG colleague Deep Joshi was one of the awardees. I also met Sheela, Deep’s lovely wife. At the end of the dinner, Deep was asked to say a few words on behalf of the awardees. He pointed out that one central theme cutting across all their work was the role of citizens – to take action, to take initiative. And since 1958, the Magsaysay spirit has been celebrating the work that citizens can do. (Spoken like a true ‘hybrid’!) This spirit – and the crucial role of ‘agency’ in rural development and poverty reduction – is something that the RLLG hybrid organizations sub-group has been examining, inspired by Deep’s vision, passion and empathy for the human context of poverty. It’s certainly nice to have such an enlightened and humble hero in our midst. Once again, our warmest congratulations to Deep for receiving this well-deserved award and honor! Chun K. Lai
